19 of the most scenic and interesting villages near Lisbon
Domestic Portuguese architecture, on a much smaller scale than the vast palaces and grand squares, is comfortingly pretty. Think jumbles of older homes and commercial buildings painted pure white with strong blue and red accents defining the doorways, windows and archways. New homes are often built to the same style so they blend right in. In some villages the old stone is left to show through. Take a tour of any of these pretty places to get a feel for the way ordinary people live. Pop into a cafe, enjoy a snack, sit in the sun, find interesting souvenirs or just stroll the streets in the hot, hot sun.

23 legendary Lisbon viewpoints
See the city from dizzying heights, take Instagrammable images to die for, feel the romance. Lisbon’s viewpoints give you a whole new view of the way the city has grown, from tiny and ancient to an international holiday hub. Take yourself off to any of these for mind-blowing vistas.
First here are a few tips for where to go and when. Fall out of a nightclub at 6am for an epic sunrise at the Portas do Sol and Santa Luzia viewpoints. For the other end of the day, maybe for a pre-going-out taster, see dazzling sunsets from the viewpoints at Senhora do Monte and Santa Catarina.
You can drink as well as drink in the views at Santa Catarina and Graça viewpoints, or turn the romance up way past eleven at São Pedro de Alcântara and Santa Luzia. After dark you get a glittering prize as the city lights up like Christmas, a particularly beautiful sight from either the Santa Justa Elevator or the viewpoint at São Pedro de Alcântara.
These are just a few of a multitude of Lisbon viewpoints. More or less everywhere there’s a hill, there’s also a viewpoint.
